(Tampa, FL) -- A mosquito-borne disease that rarely affects humans has left two people dead in Florida. Both of those who died from Eastern equine encephalitis lived in the Tampa area. Health officials say the disease called EEE has infected a rising number of horses in the state. The Hillsborough County Health Department says a woman died on July 1st and an infant died Wednesday from the disease. The illness causes brain inflammation and there is no vaccine for humans. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports very few cases in humans occur in the U.S. every year. The CDC say most are in the Atlantic and Gulf Coast states. Those who survive the illness are often left with significant brain damage.
